What is Windows?

Windows is the most used OS in the world. (to be precise, 90% uses it). It is by Microsoft Corporation.

The first "prehistoric" ancestor was DOS (Disk Operating System, a command-line environment), which was very buggy, but nonetheless very popular, so many people began using it and developing for it. And therefore Microsoft had no choice but to use it as the base for Windows, which is the main reason for most bugs and crashes in versions of Windows from before 2000.

Versions based upon DOS are:

  • Windows 3.x
  • Windows 95
  • Windows 98

In 2000 however, with the release of Windows NT and Windows ME, Microsoft changed its mind, and did not concern themselves about the compatibility with old DOS. From then on, Windows NT formed the base of the other operating systems.

  • Windows NT
  • Windows ME
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows XP

Then in 2008, Windows Vista was released. It is still buggy though, but many people use it. At the moment of writing, Microsoft is developing Windows 7, called by some "Vista as it should be". We are awaiting it!
